    Dr. Kay Young, an accomplished audiologist, earned her doctorate from the University of Florida and founded Shelby Hearing Center in 1984. With a mission to provide the perfect blend of science and patient support, she has transformed countless lives through personalized solutions. Guided by best practices, Dr. Young stays at the forefront of audiology by embracing technology and advancements, ensuring her patients enjoy an improved quality of life. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Audiology. Outside of work, Dr. Young has a variety of talents – she is a tap dancer and an award-winning quilter. She also loves to travel, enjoying exciting adventures with her husband, Lamar.

    Karen’s passion for audiology stems from her personal experience with a hearing-impaired girl who taught her sign language. She finds fulfilment in improving individuals’ hearing, enhancing their mental, physical, social, and emotional well-being. The dedicated and passionate team at Shelby Hearing Center provides Karen with the resources to deliver exceptional care. In her spare time, she enjoys outdoor activities.

    Lynn Ferree joined Shelby Hearing Center in 1991 and returned as practice manager in 2000. She plays a vital role in fulfilling the center’s mission of improving people’s hearing to keep them connected to loved ones. Lynn appreciates the organization’s commitment to treating the whole person, not just their hearing. Her contributions have been instrumental in the center’s success. In her free time, Lynn supports her husband’s band as a spokesperson and enjoys live music, dancing, and spending time with friends in the community. She also cherishes beach visits and embraces her role as a mother of three and a grandmother of four.

She is grateful to join a dedicated staff committed to improving patient’s quality of life and ensuring their satisfaction.     Melissa joined Shelby Hearing Center in 1984 as the office coordinator, recommended by Cleveland Community College. Throughout the years, she has developed a deep love for her job, thanks to her amazing boss and coworkers, and the opportunity to interact with people. Being a part of helping individuals improve their lives brings her great satisfaction. Melissa is happily married to her high school sweetheart, with a son graduating from Appalachian State University. Their household is run by their beloved little dog. In her free time, she indulges in her passion for hot rods and old collectible cars.

      • Assistive Listening Devices (ALDs)
        Recommendations and fitting of ALDs such as personal amplifiers, FM systems, or loop systems to improve hearing in specific listening situations.
      • Auditory Rehabilitation
        Individualized programs to help individuals with hearing loss develop better communication strategies and improve listening skills.
      • Counseling and Education
        Information and support regarding hearing loss, hearing conservation, communication strategies, and coping mechanisms for individuals and their families.
      • Custom Earplugs and Earmolds
        Creation and fitting of custom-made earplugs for hearing protection, swimming, musicians, and other specific needs. Also includes earmolds for hearing aids or in-ear monitors.
      • Hearing Aid Fitting and Repair
        Selection, fitting, and programming of hearing aids to address hearing loss. This includes counseling on the proper use and maintenance of hearing aids.
      • Hearing Evaluations
        Comprehensive assessments to evaluate hearing abilities, including pure-tone audiometry, speech audiometry, tympanometry, and otoacoustic emissions (OAE) testing.
      • Tinnitus Evaluation and Management
        Assessment, counseling, and development of strategies to manage tinnitus (ringing or buzzing sound in the ears).
